ORA is Kanto's compact powered speaker pair: Class D bi-amplification, a USB-C input with its own decoding, Bluetooth 5.0 and a subwoofer output that switches its crossover on by itself.

A desk is a difficult place for speakers: little space, a monitor in the middle and the listener sitting very close. Kanto designed ORA for exactly this near-field listening. Each cabinet is 10 cm wide, 14.1 cm deep and 17.5 cm tall, and the speakers can also lie on their side beneath a monitor, although Kanto notes that they sound best upright.

The system is sold as a pair: the right speaker is active and holds the amplification, inputs and controls, while the left one is passive and connects to it through the supplied 4-pin cable. The front knob sets the volume, changes the source with a press and switches the system off with a long press.

One amplifier for every driver

ORA uses Class D bi-amplification: the tweeter and the woofer each get their own amplifier channel. Kanto's manual gives 9 W RMS per tweeter and 16 W RMS per woofer, which adds up to 50 W RMS in total and 100 W peak power.

The 3/4-inch silk dome tweeter sits above a 3-inch paper cone woofer with magnetic shielding, and the bass reflex port is on the back. Kanto quotes a frequency response of 70 Hz – 22 kHz and DSP tuning for a balanced, accurate sound.

USB-C, Bluetooth and RCA, plus a subwoofer output

Over USB-C, the computer sends a digital signal of up to 24 bit/96 kHz and ORA decodes it itself, bypassing the computer's built-in converter; it appears as an audio device named 'ORA/ORA4 by Kanto'. Phones and tablets connect via Bluetooth 5.0, while a turntable with a phono preamp, a cassette deck or a games console goes into the RCA line-level input.

When you plug a cable into SUB OUT, the active crossover engages automatically at 100 Hz: the speakers leave the deepest bass to the subwoofer and concentrate on the mids and highs. The back also carries a 1/4-20 threaded insert for mounting.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate amplifier?

No. ORA is an active system: the right speaker has the amplification built in and drives the passive one through the 4-pin cable. Kanto warns not to connect the speaker terminals to the speaker outputs of a stereo amplifier.

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes. Run a single RCA cable from SUB OUT to the input of a powered subwoofer. The 100 Hz active crossover engages automatically when the cable is connected.

Does it work with a computer without a sound card?

Yes. Over USB-C, ORA receives a digital signal of up to 24 bit/96 kHz and decodes it itself. Select 'ORA/ORA4 by Kanto' as the playback device.

Can I lay them on their side?

Yes, beneath a monitor for example, but Kanto says they sound best upright, angled towards the listener and at least 20–25 cm from the wall.
