One speaker system for the turntable, the TV and the computer

TUK is Kanto's premium powered speaker system: one active and one passive speaker with AMT tweeters and aluminium woofers, class D amplification and DSP, plus enough inputs to need no extra preamp or DAC.

TUK pairs one active speaker with one passive speaker, each with a 28 x 35 mm Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter and a 5.25-inch aluminium woofer. The class D amplifier and onboard DSP sit in the active speaker. Kanto, which designs its products in Canada, positions TUK both for near-field listening at a desk and as a full home system.

What sets it apart is how many sources it takes without extra boxes: a dedicated phono input with a built-in preamp for the turntable, an RCA line input, optical for the TV, a USB DAC for the computer and Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX HD and AAC for the phone. A subwoofer output with an 80 Hz active crossover and a front headphone output complete the picture.

AMT tweeters and aluminium woofers

The 28 x 35 mm AMT tweeters deliver, according to Kanto, brighter and more accurate highs, and their wide horizontal dispersion improves stereo imaging. The 5.25-inch woofers are aluminium concave cones: their high rigidity and low mass keep them efficient and reduce distortion at higher volume.

The class D amplifier delivers 260 W peak power (130 W RMS total), and the onboard DSP shapes the sound reproduction. The stated frequency response is 50 Hz – 20 kHz; each speaker has a rear bass reflex port.

A source for every input

The phono input is separate from the RCA line input, so the turntable stays connected while you use another analogue source; a ground post sits next to it. A turntable with its own built-in preamp must not go into PHONO, Kanto warns. The optical input takes the TV sound as stereo PCM and the USB input turns TUK into the computer's sound card, listed as “TUK by Kanto”; both accept up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

Bluetooth 4.2 supports aptX, aptX HD and AAC, and the pairing stays active when you switch inputs, so you can return to the phone without pairing again. The back also has a 5 V/2 A USB charging port, live in playback and in standby.

Control from the sofa or the desk

The IR remote switches inputs, sets the volume, bass and treble, mutes the subwoofer and controls playback over Bluetooth and USB. With Bass/Treble Memory on, every input keeps its own bass and treble: more bass for games, flat for vinyl.

If the power outlet forces the active speaker to the right, a channel swap keeps the stereo image correct. TUK goes into standby after 15 minutes without a signal and wakes up when the signal returns on the same input; both functions can be switched off. The input LEDs have 5 brightness levels, off included.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an amplifier?

No. TUK is a powered system: the amplifier sits in the active speaker, which drives the passive one through the supplied speaker wire. Kanto warns against connecting the speaker inputs to the outputs of a stereo amplifier.

Can I connect the turntable directly?

Yes, if the turntable has no built-in phono preamp: plug it into PHONO and connect the ground wire to the GND post. If the turntable has its own preamp, use the RCA input; Kanto warns that using PHONO in that case can damage the speakers and void the warranty.

How do I connect it to the TV?

Through the optical (TOSLINK) input. TUK needs a stereo signal: set the TV's digital audio output to PCM or stereo, not surround, Dolby or DTS. The optical input accepts up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

Is this the new TUK G2?

No. This page describes the original TUK, which Kanto lists among its Generation 1 products: it has a dedicated phono input and Bluetooth 4.2. Kanto now sells a different generation, TUK G2, whose specifications do not apply here.
