Kanto Audio — Powered speakers

A complete stereo system in two compact cabinets

YU pairs an active speaker with a passive one: the amplifier, the Bluetooth receiver and the inputs sit in the left cabinet, and a speaker cable feeds the right one. One power cord, one source, and you are listening.

Kanto designed YU in Canada as a stereo system that keeps things simple without giving up performance. Each MDF cabinet holds a 1-inch silk dome tweeter and a 4-inch Kevlar® woofer, and the Class D amplifier in the active speaker delivers 140 W peak power, 70 W total RMS.

There are two sources to choose from: Bluetooth 4.2 with Qualcomm® aptX™ for a phone, tablet or laptop, and an RCA input for a computer, a TV or any other line-level source. A subwoofer output and a remote control complete the system.

Silk and Kevlar®, in two ways

The 1-inch silk dome tweeter handles the high frequencies; Kanto uses the dome shape to spread the sound more widely into the room. The 4-inch Kevlar® woofer covers the midrange and the bass, and the crossover between them sits at 2.0 kHz. The rated frequency response is 60 Hz – 20 kHz.

Both drivers are powered by a Class D amplifier into a nominal 4 ohm load: 140 W peak power, 70 W total RMS, with total harmonic distortion below 0.25%.

Bluetooth, RCA and a subwoofer output

The back of the active speaker carries the RCA L/R input, the SUB OUT jack, the terminals that feed the passive speaker, the power switch and the AC inlet. On the front, push the knob to switch between RCA and Bluetooth, turn it for volume, and press and hold it to enter or leave standby.

Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX appears on your device as “YU by Kanto”; Kanto recommends staying within 10 m of the speakers. SUB OUT sends the signal to a powered subwoofer over a single RCA cable. After 15 minutes without signal YU goes into standby and wakes up when the same input plays again; both functions can be switched off from the remote.

The remote and the setup

The supplied remote selects the input, sets volume, bass, treble and balance, resets each of them and mutes the sound. On Bluetooth it also handles play/pause and previous or next track, and a reset button disconnects the paired device so that another one can pair. A front LED shows the state: white for playback, yellow for standby, blue for Bluetooth.

Kanto recommends placing the speakers at least 8 inches from the rear wall and away from room corners, on a bookshelf or a rigid stand. Each cabinet has a threaded insert for mounting on a stand.

Frequently asked questions

Do both speakers need a power outlet?

No. Only the active speaker (left channel) connects to the mains. The passive speaker (right channel) takes its signal from the active one through the supplied speaker cable.

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes. Connect a single RCA cable from SUB OUT to the input of a powered subwoofer; on a subwoofer with L/R inputs, either one works. Kanto recommends its sub8, with crossover and volume controls.

Why do the speakers go into standby?

After 15 minutes without an audio signal YU enters standby to save power and wakes up when the same input plays again. A very low source volume can also trigger standby. Holding the Bass Reset button on the remote for 5 seconds switches automatic standby off.

Can I pair more than one Bluetooth device?

YU can be paired with several devices, but only one plays at a time. The Bluetooth reset button on the remote disconnects the current device so that another can connect.
