Small desktop speakers with their own sound card

YU2 pairs an active speaker with a passive one, each only 15 cm tall. Connect the computer over USB and the built-in DAC decodes the sound; plug a phone into AUX; add a subwoofer when you want more bass.

Kanto designed YU2 in Canada as a desktop mini-monitor: a stereo pair for near-field listening at the computer, which also works as a standalone system with other sources. Each cabinet measures 100 x 150 x 135 mm and holds a 3/4-inch silk dome tweeter and a 3-inch woofer; the active speaker weighs 1.4 kg, the passive one 1.3 kg.

The Class D amplifier in the active speaker delivers 25 W RMS per channel into 4 ohms, 50 W total RMS and 100 W peak. There are two inputs, USB and 3.5 mm AUX, plus an output for a subwoofer.

Two drivers and a rear port

The 3/4-inch silk dome tweeter handles the high frequencies and the 3-inch woofer the midrange and bass; the crossover between them sits at 2.5 kHz. The rated frequency response is 80 Hz – 20 kHz (± 6 dB), with a sensitivity of 84 dB (2.83 V/1 m).

At the back, a bass reflex port tuned by Kanto extends the low end and keeps the airflow away from your workspace. Kanto recommends leaving 20 to 25 cm between the speakers and the rear wall for the best bass response.

USB, AUX and a subwoofer output

Connected to the computer with the supplied USB cable, YU2 appears as “USB Audio DAC” and decodes the signal itself, up to 16-bit/48 kHz, bypassing the computer’s built-in sound card. The 3.5 mm AUX input takes a phone or a media player and, with an RCA to 3.5 mm cable, a CD player or a turntable with a built-in phono preamp.

SUB OUT sends the signal to a powered subwoofer over a single RCA cable; Kanto recommends its sub6 or sub8. The volume knob on the active speaker also switches the system on and off, and the passive speaker connects through knurled binding posts and the supplied speaker wire.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the USB input?

Connect YU2 to the computer with the supplied USB cable and select “USB Audio DAC” as the output device in the computer’s audio settings. The built-in DAC handles streams up to 16-bit/48 kHz.

Can I connect a turntable?

Yes, through the AUX input with an RCA to 3.5 mm cable, if the turntable has a built-in phono preamp or goes through a separate phono preamp.

Do both speakers need a power outlet?

No. Only the active speaker (left) connects to the mains, through the external AC/DC power supply. The passive speaker (right) takes its signal from the active one through the supplied speaker wire.

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes. Connect a single RCA cable from SUB OUT to the input of a powered subwoofer; on a subwoofer with L/R inputs, either one works. Kanto recommends its sub6 or sub8.
