Kanto Audio - Powered bookshelf speakers, YU series (generation 1)

      Kanto Audio YU6

A pair of powered bookshelf speakers that takes the place of a separate amplifier: the left speaker holds a Class D amplifier, a phono preamp and five inputs, so a turntable, a TV and a phone all play through the same pair.

In shortAmplifier, phono preamp and 5 inputs built in200 W peak power, 100 W RMS in totalMatte black, matte white or walnut

The YU6 on this page is the first generation of Kanto's powered speaker, the one with 5.25 inch Kevlar® woofers, two optical inputs and Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX. Kanto has since launched a second generation (G2) with different drivers and connections, so it is worth being clear: this is the original YU6, in the matte black, matte white and walnut finishes that Kanto lists for generation 1. The pair is asymmetric by design. The left speaker is active: it holds the Class D amplifier, rated by Kanto at 200 W peak power and 100 W RMS in total, the power input, the controls and every connection. The right speaker is passive and takes its signal from the active one through the speaker wire in the box. The back panel offers five sources: an RCA input that switches between line and phono, a 3.5 mm AUX input, two optical inputs and Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX. A subwoofer output and a 5 V / 1 A USB charging port complete the panel. The front has a single knob: turn it for volume, press it to step through the inputs and hold it for standby. Everything else, including bass, treble and balance, is adjusted from the remote.

Rear panels of the Kanto Audio YU6 pair in walnut: the active speaker with RCA, AUX, two optical inputs and subwoofer output

      Five sources on one panel

Every connection sits on the back of the active speaker, the left one. The RCA input switches between line and phono, so a turntable without its own preamp plugs in directly, and its ground wire has a dedicated terminal. The two optical inputs feed a DAC that accepts up to 24-bit/96 kHz, enough for a TV and a second digital source at the same time.

      • RCA with phono/line switch and a turntable ground terminal
      • 3.5 mm AUX, 2 optical (TOSLINK) inputs and Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX
      • Subwoofer output and 5 V / 1 A USB charging port
One Kanto Audio YU6 speaker in matte white, front: silk dome tweeter and Kevlar woofer

      Silk on top, Kevlar® below

Each speaker is a 2-way design: a 1 inch silk dome tweeter above a 5.25 inch Kevlar® woofer, crossed over at 2.0 kHz, with a bass reflex port on the back. Kanto recommends at least 8 inch between the back of the speaker and the wall; closer to the wall the bass grows, but soundstage depth shrinks.

      • 1 inch silk dome tweeter
      • 5.25 inch Kevlar® woofer, 2-way crossover at 2.0 kHz
      • 1/4"-20 threaded hole underneath for a compatible stand
Kanto YU series remote with buttons for sources, volume, bass, treble and balance

      Fine-tuning happens on the remote

The included remote selects each source directly and adjusts volume, bass, treble and left-right balance, each with its own reset button. On Bluetooth it also handles previous track, play/pause and next track. With no signal for 15 minutes the speakers go into standby and wake up when the same input starts playing again; auto power-up can be switched off from the remote and does not work on the Bluetooth input.

      • Direct buttons for sources, volume and mute
      • Bass, treble and balance, each with a reset
      • Bluetooth playback control and Bluetooth reset

      Frequently asked questions

Is this the generation 1 or the G2 YU6?

Generation 1 (G1). It is the YU6 with 5.25 inch Kevlar® woofers, two optical inputs and Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX, in matte black, matte white or walnut. The newer YU6 G2 has abaca-reinforced paper woofers, USB-C audio, Bluetooth 5.3 and other colours; its specifications do not apply to this product. Kanto states that generation 1 is no longer in production and is sold while retailer stock lasts, and the G1 manuals and documentation remain available on the manufacturer's website.

Is the price for one speaker or for the pair?

For the pair. The YU6 is a system of one active and one passive speaker that only work together: the active speaker drives the passive one through the supplied speaker wire. Both come in the same box, together with the remote and the cables.

Can I connect a turntable directly?

Yes, if the turntable has no preamp of its own: connect it to the RCA input, set the switch to Phono and attach the ground wire to the GND terminal, if there is one. If the turntable has a built-in preamp, use the Line position; Kanto warns that the Phono position with an already preamplified turntable can damage the speakers and voids the warranty.

Why is there no sound from the TV on the optical input?

Set the TV's audio output to stereo or PCM, not surround, Dolby, DTS or 5.1, and keep the sample rate at 96 kHz or lower. This is the setting Kanto's manual gives for the optical inputs.

      Specifications

Values come from Kanto's generation 1 YU6 manual and product sheet. Frequency response is left out on purpose: the manual and the product sheet give 50 Hz – 20 kHz, while the official generation comparison chart gives 55 Hz – 20 kHz. The product sheet also mentions AAC next to aptX, but the other official sources list aptX only, so we publish aptX only.
