      A pair of passive bookshelf speakers with 5.25 inch Kevlar® woofers and silk dome tweeters, for the amplifier, receiver or DAC/amp you already own.

      The YUP6 is the passive version of Kanto's YU speakers with a 5.25 inch woofer, from the first generation. Kanto has since launched the Yu6 Passive G2 with different drivers and colours, so to be clear: this is the original YUP6, in black or white, with exactly the product codes that Kanto's official sheet gives for this generation. Unlike the YU6, the YUP6 has no amplifier, inputs or remote: each speaker has just a pair of terminals and connects to one amplifier channel. It does use the same kind of drivers: a 1 inch silk dome tweeter above a 5.25 inch Kevlar® woofer, in an MDF cabinet with a bass reflex port. Kanto rates power handling at 100 W per speaker, impedance at 6 ohms and sensitivity at 89 dB, and pairs it with an amplifier delivering 100 W per channel into 6 ohms. The manufacturer suggests it for a desktop next to a DAC/amp, a dedicated stereo system, a TV through an integrated amplifier, or as rear, side or height speakers in a home theatre system.

      A pair of terminals, nothing else

      On the back of each speaker are the binding posts and the bass reflex port. Kanto recommends 16 to 12 AWG speaker wire: the red terminal to the positive of the amplifier's left channel, the black one to the negative, then the same for the right speaker. Connect the wires with the amplifier switched off.

      Each speaker is a 2-way design: a 1 inch silk dome tweeter and a 5.25 inch Kevlar® woofer. Kanto describes the tone as neutral and balanced, and the solid MDF cabinets are there to reduce unwanted vibration.

      On a desk, on a stand or next to the TV

      Underneath, each speaker has a 1/4"-20 threaded hole for bolting it to a compatible Kanto stand. Kanto recommends the SP26PL and SP32PL floor stands, and S6 and SP6HD for the desk. The manual asks for at least 8 inch between the back of the speaker and the wall; closer to the wall the bass grows, but the soundstage loses depth.

      Frequently asked questions

      Is this the generation 1 YUP6 or the Yu6 Passive G2?

      Generation 1. Kanto's official YUP6 sheet gives exactly the codes of the variants we sell: 800152720609 for black and 800152720616 for white. The newer Yu6 Passive G2 has different drivers and colours, and its specifications do not apply to this product. Kanto states that generation 1 is no longer in production, and its documentation remains available on the manufacturer's website.

      Is the price for one speaker or for the pair?

      For the pair. The box contains two YUP6 speakers, and the product code of each variant we sell is the pair's code in Kanto's sheet.

      What amplifier do I need?

      Kanto pairs it with an amplifier delivering 100 W per channel into 6 ohms. Nominal impedance is 6 ohms, so check that your amplifier or receiver accepts that load. Being passive speakers, the YUP6 will not play without an amplifier, a receiver or a DAC/amp.

      Can I use them in a home theatre system?

      Yes. Kanto suggests them as rear, side or height speakers in a home theatre system connected to an AV receiver, and for TV sound you can connect them to an integrated amplifier.

      Specifications

      Values come from Kanto's generation 1 YU Passive manual, the YUP6 product sheet and the official generation comparison chart. Frequency response is left out on purpose: the manual and the sheet give 50 Hz – 20 kHz, while the comparison chart gives 55 Hz – 20 kHz. The official page called the finishes Matte Black and Matte White, the sheet Vinyl Black and Vinyl White, so we simply call them black and white.
